Synopsis of the The Prestige
In late 19th-century London, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, two young magicians, start as colleagues and aspiring protégés under the same mentor. Their relationship turns bitter and adversarial after a tragic accident during a performance—Angier's wife drowns when Borden ties a knot that he claims was 'the wrong one', though the truth remains ambiguous. Consumed by grief and a desire for revenge, Angier becomes obsessed with outperforming Borden, launching a relentless rivalry that dominates both their lives. Borden rises to fame with his seemingly impossible trick 'The Transported Man', which leaves Angier desperate to uncover its secret. Angier's pursuit leads him to extreme lengths: he travels across the globe, enlists the help of the enigmatic inventor Nikola Tesla, and sacrifices his personal relationships and even his own identity in his quest to create a trick that will surpass Borden's. As their competition escalates, both magicians descend into a spiral of deception, betrayal, and moral corruption, with each trick becoming more dangerous and more costly. The line between illusion and reality blurs, and the true 'prestige'—the final, breathtaking moment of a magic trick—proves to be far more devastating than either could have imagined.
